ON THE LOOKOUT FOR FEET!
Elkintra feels calm and relaxed in dark meditation. He has used his reverie to strengthen his inner reserves and Protean bloodline powers and now empties his mind, concentrating on the physical aspects of body maintenance. In his mind he massages worn muscles, soothes tingling nerves and gently exercises deep into the marrow of his bones. He has no need for alertness, trusting fully to the watchful eyes of the imp. However, unlike some of his companions, he is not asleep, so at the first warning from the imp outside, he is ready.
Before he even knows the danger, he ensures his own mobility by casting Expeditious Retreat – he must try not to engage physically with any ememy. The Imp has warned to avert eyes. This sounds to the dark elf like an attack from a deadly gazing creature. Elkintra’s training has prepared him for such things.
Try not to look at the enemy’s face, instead look at its body, watch its shadow, attempt to track in a reflective surface. Elkintra knows this is not always effective. Sometimes the eyes wander too far. Discipline! Discipline! He looks out along the ground towards where he thinks the creature will be. He is using his ears to listen as well. If he can see the feet without the eyes, then it may be he can still bring his protoplasmic powers to bear. A creature stuck is still a creature hindered – killer gaze or not!
A battle strategy is not something that one learns or remembers. It is instilled in the very heart and soul of every male drow through years of intensive training. One does not stop to think. One acts, and thoughts fly with one’s actions, augmenting them into dire consequences for foes!
